Nikah over Phone Call or Video Call
Question:- If a bride is in Pakistan and the groom is out of the country, for visa and documentation purposes, is it permissible to arrange nikah on phone call, WhatsApp call or phone call with camera on? Can we arrange this in a masjid? Kindly advise. JazakAllah o Khair.
Answer:- Nikāḥ by the means of phone and/or video call such as Skype, Zoom or Facebook Live is not permissible in Islam. Offer and acceptance of Nikāḥ must take place in the same geographical space, in the presence of witnesses.
